Karan Johar’s Regrets: Examining Gender Politics in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai

One of the most well-known producers and directors in the nation is Karan Johar. He has produced numerous box office successes to date and will return to directing with Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani. The director, who is now marketing the movie, has received criticism for the storyline and some misogynistic lines in his 1998 film Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, which starred Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol. The director recently acknowledged that his work promoted the incorrect gender politics.

With KKHH, KJo made his filmmaking debut in 1998. He assumed control of his father’s production company, Dharma, after his sudden death in 2004.

Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, his debut film, was a big success as the director’s work gained recognition over time. In the movie, Rahul, Anjali, and Tina were involved in a love triangle (played by SRK, Kajol and Rani Mukerji). Rahul marries Tina despite Anjali being more of a tomboy and falling in love with her attractiveness. But when Tina passes away from illness, she urges her daughter to bring Rahul and Anjali back together because they have always been in love. The film’s plot, which finds Rahul falling in love after Anjali starts sporting lovely sarees and long hair, has received criticism on numerous occasions.

According to the Indian Express, Karan Johar addressed the criticism during his most recent appearance at the IIMUN event and claimed that the movie “promotes improper gender politics.” “I think I have changed as a person,” she declared. “I firmly believe that the gender politics of my debut movie, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, were incorrect. There is a lot of superficiality in that movie, and it promotes the wrong gender politics. There is undoubtedly some nostalgia in it, which is why you enjoy it, but you don’t have to look very far into the movie to see that what Rahul does is not really what I want all the other Rahuls—or all the other boys in the audience—to do.

Karan is teased by Ranveer Singh that the movie won’t be shown during the “awakened” time. On the portrayal of the film, Karan Johar responded to the actor by saying this. No, it’s not about waking up, the director clarified. The movie is a powerful illustration of how today’s dynamism can be translated into faith since it is about the dynamic that we portray in film. Rahul was saying a lot of inappropriate stuff. Although they claimed to only fall in love once, they actually did. We only married once, he added. He had two marriages. He was in conflict with himself the entire movie.

What do you think of Karan Johar’s decision to accept his errors in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai?
