The Director Of Satyaprem Ki Katha Says That Women Should Fight For Their Rights Against Patriarchy

Satyaprem’s tale, according to director Sameer Vidwans, is about a “feminist husband” who only plays a supporting role in his wife’s quest for justice. The romance drama, which hit theatres last month, explores date rape and trauma via the tale of an eccentric married couple, Satyaprem and Katha, who are alternately portrayed by Kartik Aaryan and Kiara Advani.

Sameer Vidwan on Patriarchal Society

According to Sameer, the movie attempts to make men more aware of the need to support women in society’s fight against patriarchy. “This is a feminist husband’s tale. Because of the patriarchal nature of society, women must battle for their rights. Men need to be sensitive if we want to deal with the patriarchal society, Sameer stated.

“With our film, we have given a kind of husband who says, ‘You go and be the hero, I will be the supporting character of your story,'” the filmmaker told PTI in an interview.

Sameer On The Story Of Satyaprem

While Satyaprem’s story has made 100 crores in box office revenue worldwide, some people have attacked it on social media for depicting Karthik’s character as a hero. Everyone, according to Sameer, is entitled to an opinion.

“Yet, I believe the critics missed Sattu’s line, “I will be a supporting role in your story,” in the dialogue. Two times in the movie, he says that. He doesn’t make the heroic, I’ll save you declaration. But he insists that you must play the hero, and I will support you “said he.

Added he, “He informs the girl that she must struggle. He serves as little more than a rock for her.”

How Guilty Helped Kiara For Satyaprem Katha

The filmmaker claimed that Kiara’s prior experience with her similar-themed 2020 film Guilty helped her when she began working on Satyaprem’s Katha.

At that time, he had spoken with numerous rape survivors, Sameer recalled. When he began to develop this movie, he thought back to that encounter. She claimed that as a result of her interactions with rape victims, she can relate to the situation.

Says Sameer “She agreed that a natural performance was what we sought. We avoided going into dramatic area or being overly superficial. She did an excellent job allowing us to fully explore the character.”

Sameer Wanted To Give A Message To The Audience

The story’s author is listed as Karan Sharma, who also worked with the director on the widely praised Marathi movie Anandi Gopal from 2019, which received the National Film Award for Best Film on Other Social Problems.

Sameer, who is best known for the Marathi films Time Please, Double Seat, and Mala Kahich Problem Nahi, said he has always wanted to make a movie in Hindi that will both entertain and convey a message.

He went on to say, “It would be even great if I could use my art to spread a message. I therefore concluded the script checked all the conditions when I heard it—it is in Hindi, it is entertaining, and it has a point. I had no justification for declining it.”

Since he did not want the movie to be “preachy,” Sameer found it to be a fascinating movie. Said he, “We tried to convey a positive message despite the fact that we were dealing with a delicate subject. In addition to conveying a message, we also intended to entertain. We made sure we stayed on our route in all of our decisions, whether they were regarding treatment, casting, or anything else. We managed to preserve the movie’s essence.”

Sameer Is Happy With The Fans’ Response To The Film

The director expressed his satisfaction at how the audience responded to Satyaprem’s story. “I feel pleased, and it’s even better that our idea for a topic was well received and taken up by the audience. The fact that it has now raked in 100 crores is evidence that viewers enjoyed the movie.

Sajid Nadiadwala and Namah Pictures produced the movie. Gajraj Rao, Supriya Pathak, Rajpal Yadav, and Shikha Talsania are featured as well.
