Since its July 21 release, Christopher Nolan’s military drama Oppenheimer has become a hot topic. The movie, which is based on the life of renowned physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, has also been a hit in Indian theatres. Yet, a private sex scene between star actor Cillian Murphy and actress Florence Pugh has caused controversy surrounding the movie. Several people were furious over the moment in which Cillian Murphy’s Oppenheimer read a passage from the Bhagavad Gita while having sex with Florence Pugh’s Jean Tatlock. The majority of Twitter users responded adversely to the message and decried the incident. Oppenheimer’s sex scene causes outrage

Indian viewers said that the intimate encounter offended their religious sensibilities. A boycott has already been suggested. Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer is the first movie to receive a R certificate for explicit sex and nudity in the past 20 years. When Oppenheimer is asked to read a poem from the Bhagavad Gita by his girlfriend Jean Tatlock, the two are shown sharing an intimate moment in the movie. Some viewers attacked the censor board for choosing to obscure some of the intimate scenes and remove some profanity while choosing to keep the reference to the Bhagavad Gita during the sex scene. One commenter alleged that Oppenheimer’s sexual scene was a complete “disrespect” to the Bhagavad Gita. He tweeted: “Hindus are happy that the Bhagavad Gita is mentioned in the Oppenheimer movie, but they are horrified and appalled by Hollywood’s egregious denigration of the Gita. Quotes from spiritual texts during sexual activity are viewed as rude and discriminatory. Shun Oppenheimer.” Also read: Devdutt Patnaik Says Oppenheimer Misinterpreted a Bhagavad Gita Verse, “Never Heard This Line”

Another remark stated, “Now that Oppenheimer depicts Murphy reciting the Bhagavad Gita during a sex scene, Hollywood needs to pick up some values as well, and the movie should be avoided. Stop putting down Hindu sentiment.”

Another person criticized Oppenheimer’s producers for allowing “blasphemy of Hinduism” and wrote, “The censor board cut out the derogatory words in the Oppenheimer film, but allowed the scene where the lead actor has sex while reciting the Bhagavad Gita.”

Oppenheimer’s Super Cast

Cillian Murphy, Florence Pugh, Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, and Rami Malek are among Oppenheimer’s cast members. The setting for the story is World War Two. Oppenheimer, dubbed the “father of the atomic bomb,” was in charge of the 1945 explosions in New Mexico as well as Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
