Unique: The International Booker Prize, which is the world’s largest prize for fiction translated into English, is working with Mubi, Bookseller Foyles, and London’s The Garden Cinema on a project involving six titles nominated for its 2023 edition.
Mubi is a streaming service, a production company, and a company that sells films. Before the winner of the 2023 Book Prize is announced on May 23, six films have been chosen to go with each of the shortlisted books. (See the list below)
The 2023 winners will take part in a special Q&A at the Garden Cinema. Then, the film that Mubi chose to go with the winning book will be shown.
Fiametta Rocco, who works for the International Booker Prize, said that the idea came from the UK’s changing view of foreign language films and the fact that fewer people are reading translated fiction.
“It’s part of a bigger cultural trend in which more and more films, TV shows, and songs that aren’t in English are becoming popular around the world. Young people are interested, curious, and willing to try new things. They also know where their country’s borders are. have a good sense of things,” Rocco said.
“There is a natural and underused link between international fiction and international film, as well as between the people who read and watch both. “We want to get people who like translated fiction to watch more international films, and vice versa, so they can learn more about other cultures,” she said.
