He began his career in Florida’s Championship Wrestling as a face, teaming with his brother-in-law Barry Windham. The US Express tag team was founded in the WWF in 1984 by Rotunda and Windham. They twice held the WWF Tag Team Title, and they engaged in thrilling competition with groups like The Iron Sheik and Nikolai Volkoff.
Soon after, The US Express won back their championship titles, only to lose them two months later to Brutus Beefcake and Greg Valentine. While Rotunda continued to compete in singles contests before leaving the WWF in early 1986, Windham quit the WWF.
