After waiting three years for his first cap, Arjun Tendulkar made his Indian Premier League debut last week for Mumbai Indians. Arjun received the team’s cap from captain Rohit Sharma, and the bowling all-rounder had a respectable start to his IPL career. In his maiden game, he only bowled two overs, both in the Powerplay, giving up 18 runs. Arjun finally secured his first league wicket by removing Bhuvneshwar Kumar in his subsequent game on Tuesday against Sunrisers Hyderabad.

Arjun was given the opportunity to bowl the game’s final over after Rohit gave the younger Tendulkar 20 runs to defend off the final six deliveries. In the end, the 23-year-old gave up only five runs, dismissing Bhuvneshwar on the game’s sixth delivery. In spite of the absence of some of the top bowlers, such as Jofra Archer and Jasprit Bumrah, Arjun bowled his yorkers almost perfectly in the final over, impressing both fans and previous cricket players with his line and lengths.
In response to a question from Hindustan Times regarding Arjun’s early performances and whether the MI may utilize him in death overs more frequently this season, former Indian cricketer Pragyan Ojha spoke in-depth about the bowling all-rounder before the team’s match against Punjab Kings.
“As a young youngster who is only playing his second game, I believe he has demonstrated what perseverance and hard work can accomplish. It’s difficult to bowl those overs, especially if it’s your second game. Whatever he was attempting to accomplish, it was working out for him. He succeeded in his goal of getting the ball to swing into the hitter. He attempted to bowl yorkers, and he was successful at doing so as well. He wants to work hard and has the necessary skills and temperament, according to Ojha, an IPL specialist for Jio Cinema, who spoke to Hindustan Times.
The son of renowned former cricketer Sachin Tendulkar needs to be “dragged” out of the nets, according to Ojha’s conversation with Zaheer Khan, MI’s worldwide head for cricket development.
“I was chatting to Zaheer Khan the other day, and he said that because of Arjun’s determination, you had to drag him out of the nets. He must be evaluated on an individual basis, not as the progeny of a legend. He needs to get better, of course. You need to have as many abilities as you can muster to stay competitive in these leagues and advance to play higher levels of cricket as T20 cricket continues to develop, according to Ojha.
It’s interesting to note that many previous cricket players have said similar things about Sachin Tendulkar both before and after the latter started playing. The same thing was expressed about Tendulkar by former India captain Sourav Ganguly, who had played with the great since they were both U-15 players.
“Playing with a legend like him has been a privilege. We were aware of his unique skill even back when we were in U-15. He simply adored hitting. He had to be dragged out of the nets by our coach for other players to have a chance. In 2012, Ganguly remarked regarding Tendulkar, “His love for the game has not lessened one bit.
At the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, where MI will play the Punjab Kings, Tendulkar junior is most likely to keep his spot. MI are now sixth in the IPL 2023 standings after three consecutive victories.
